The Shape of Chaos

2025-2026

Humanity has always feared chaos, yet today it has become so omnipresent that perhaps we ought to place it at the center of a new understanding of the world. Of all the metaphors that emerged from science over the past century, we have clung to this one because it seems to embody our present condition in a way that no form of order, however balanced, beautiful, or reassuring, could ever hope to achieve.

This series of paintings seeks to represent a particular kind of complex, nonlinear dynamical system that, despite being deterministic, remains impossible to predict. Its evolution, as sudden as it is seemingly random, escapes conventional equations and demands a new way of thinking. Yet chaos is not mere disorder: there are laws governing its movements and mysterious forms tracing the diversity of its trajectories strange attractors that, unfolding through time, coil into bands revolving around a center that never fully reveals itself. In these works, such trajectories weave themselves into an intricate network that twists, folds back upon itself, accelerates, and dissolves, never quite repeating itself.

Considered the third great scientific revolution of the twentieth century, alongside relativity and quantum mechanics, chaos theory moved beyond the realm of physics to become a way of intuiting the world. What endures is not an equation but an image: that of a trajectory that never repeats itself and yet never escapes the form that contains it. It is in this coexistence of law and deviation that its unsettling nature resides, for it suggests that our world, our societies, even our minds, are systems to which we belong, systems we can neither observe from the outside nor fully control.

If what we know expands at the speed of light, what remains beyond our understanding grows at the speed of shadow, exponentially, like the dark energy that tears the cosmos apart. These paintings inhabit that territory of what eludes us. Ribbons and spirals revolve around an axis that divides each composition into two halves, governed by the same underlying structure yet unfolding through different patterns and colors. Each turn echoes the one before it without ever coinciding with it; the bands expand and contract until they dissolve. What is depicted is not chaos as accident, but the moment when a form becomes legible without becoming predictable.
